A 19-year-old female sailor discovered aboard a Navy ship off San Diego with a gunshot wound has died, naval officials said.

The woman, whose name is being withheld, was discovered on the Amphibious Assault Ship Essex, U-T San Diego reported.

The sailor was transported to the University of California, San Diego trauma center and pronounced dead, Navy spokesman Rick Chernitzer said. It is unclear whether she shot herself or someone else shot her.

“Since an investigation is being conducted, it would be inappropriate for me to speculate on anything,” Mr. Chernitzer said, according to U-T San Diego. “The Navy family is greatly saddened by the loss of our sailor, and our thoughts go out to the family, friends and shipmates.”
