The American Academy of Pediatrics, which represents 60,000-plus physicians, says it’s in the best interests of children if gays are allowed to legally marry.
In the group’s words: Same-sex marriage is “the best way to guarantee benefits and security for their children,” as quoted by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The group will make the announcement official with a statement in the April edition of Pediatrics journal. Members say they took five years to study the issue and arrive at a final policy decision.
“We were charged with this question — is marriage equality for same-sex couples in the best interests of children?” said Ellen Perrin, who helped co-author the Academy’s statement, as quoted by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “If a child has two loving and capable parents who create a permanent relationship in the way of marriage, that’s in the chid’s best interests.”
