A Chicago politician wants to demolish Wrigley Field’s iconic scoreboard to clear the sky view for nearby residents.
Alderman Tom Tunney is worried the board obstructs the views of those who stand on rooftops on buildings near the field, United Press International reports. Chicago media report Mr. Tunney’s request — which he’s made several times — is likely tied to the fact that many of his campaign contributions come from those who own and operate rooftop clubs.
The scoreboard is a hand-operated fixture at the 99-year-old ballfield. Mr. Tunney wants to replace it with a video screen, UPI says.
Cubs officials aren’t on board.
“Demolishing the landmark old scoreboard has never been part of any plan discussed or envisioned by the Ricketts family,” said Dennis Culloton, a spokesman for Tom Ricketts, the Cubs chairman, in the UPI report.
