Stanford and UConn have each claimed top seeds in the NCAA women’s tournament.

The two perennial powers have both made the past five Final Fours.

UConn has lost in the last two national semifinals to Notre Dame and the Cardinal were beaten by Baylor last season. The Lady Bears and the Fighting Irish are ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the country and seem likely to be the other top teams in the NCAA tournament field of 64, which was being announced Monday night.

Led by junior star Chiney Ogwumike, Stanford may already have the most impressive win this season, ending Baylor’s 42-game winning streak in November. That’s the only loss that the defending national champion Lady Bears suffered this season.

The Cardinal, who will open up against Tulsa at home on Saturday, could face No. 2 seed California in the Spokane Region final.

UConn has already lost to the Irish three times this season, including in the Big East championship game last week.
