The Defense Department has issued a schedule for how it will manage furloughs of its nearly 800,000 civilian workers, as part of the Pentagon’s efforts to implement automatic spending cuts that began March 1.
According to the schedule:
• March 21 through March 25 — Furlough proposal notices will be sent to employees.
• March 28 through April 1 — Employees’ reply period will end seven days after their proposals were sent.
• March 29 through April 24 — Furlough decision letters will sent to employees, depending on when their proposal notices were sent and prior to first day of furlough.
• April 25 — Furlough period will begin.
The Pentagon’s furlough’s will require civilian workers to take one day of unpaid leave each week for 22 weeks through Sept. 30. Officials said the schedule dates are subject to change.
Under the automatic spending cuts, the Pentagon must reduce its budget by $46 billion by Sept. 30.
