To young conservatives, gay marriage is pretty much a dead issue, Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker said Sunday.
“I’ve had young people ask me … why the government is sanctioning it in the first place,” Mr. Walker said, during a televised discussion with NBC host David Gregory. Mr. Walker said that most of the younger conservatives aren’t really focused on fighting same-sex marriage — that they believe it’s a human right much more than older traditional GOP voters do, he said in a Newsmax report.
CNN Republican political pundit Ana Navarro agreed.
“As the youngest person on this panel, I think it’s generational,” she said, in the Newsmax report. “I want people who are pro-traditional marriage to tolerate my views and … I need to tolerate the views of those who think marriage is just a man and a woman and know that that does not make them a bigot.”
The discussion was centered on the recent announcement of conservative Sen. Rob Portman, who recently reversed his view of gay marriage. He said he now supports same-sex marriage, due in part, to one of his son’s coming out as a homosexual.
