The Muslim Brotherhood has condemned the United Nations’ just-released declaration on women’s rights, saying it’s a blatant violation of Egypt’s Islamic law.
U.N. members haven’t yet ratified the End Violence Against Women declaration that was presented at the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women’s 57th session, United Press International reports.
But Brotherhood officials are issuing a pre-emptive strike.
“This is a misleading title,” the group said on its Facebook page. “The document includes articles that contradict the principles of Islam … and aim to destroy the family.”
Three sections in particular dismay the Brotherhood, UPI reports: allowing women to have lesbians as partners, allowing teens to receive instruction about birth control, and providing protections for prostitutes and equal rights for gays.
“The Muslim Brotherhood urges the leaders of Islamic countries and their U.N. representatives to reject and condemn this document,” the group said in its Facebook statement.
