MSNBC’s “Hardball” host Chris Matthews sneered at a guest’s argument Tuesday night that conservatives are coming around to the idea that the Iraq war was “mismanaged.”

During an interview about the George W. Bush’s presidency, Wayne Slater, author of “Bush’s Brain,” made the point that many social conservatives are no longer defending the Iraq War as justified.

“These are very strong, Republican conservatives coming around to the view that the Bush administration mismanaged the war,” Mr. Slater said.

“Mismanaged? Excuse me.” Mr. Matthews interrupted. “What a dodge that is.

“This mismanaged thing — [they] went to war on false pretenses that they didn’t even believe were the reasons they went to war,” he continued. “If you waterboard Cheney, he ain’t going to say weapons of mass destruction. He’s gonna say, ’I wanted to get Iraq, and I saw my chance.’”
