Sen. Patty Murray’s budget, due to be debated by fellow Democrats in a closed-door meeting with President Obama on Tuesday, will raise taxes by almost $1 trillion, unnamed sources say.

The budget plan also is supposed to cut spending by nearly the same amount, Politico reports. Public discussion of the plan at the committee level is set to start Wednesday.

The budget proposal represents the Democrat-controlled Senate’s first in more than 1,000 days. It’s not binding, Politico reminds, but it does give the Democratic Party a direction for more budget discussions.

Politico insiders predict that the plan from Mrs. Murray, of Washington state, will be supported by Democrats and that it likely will pass full Senate muster.

The plan is a sharp counter to a budget proposal from Rep. Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican and House Budget Committee chairman, which looks to trim $4.6 trillion in federal expenditures.

“It will be a stark contrast,” said Senate Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin, Illinois Democrat, in Politico.
