Susan E. Rice, the current U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, is President Obama’s top choice for national security adviser, political insiders say.
Mrs. Rice is the “far-and-away” favorite for Thomas Donilon’s spot, The Guardian reports, citing other media. Mrs. Rice faced political fire as Mr. Obama’s candidate of choice for secretary of state, mostly over her role in explaining the administration’s response to the U.S. Consulate attack in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead. She has maintained a quiet image since then.
But insiders say she soon could reappear on the national political scene.
Mr. Donilon might be out, and she might be in, The Guardian reports. Some insiders, unnamed in the report, say she could be recommended for the national security adviser spot before the end of this year.
An announcement could come in July, when the United States is due to take over the lead position in the U.N. Security Council, The Guardian reports.
