OPINION:
Sen. John McCain and Sen. Lindsey Graham criticized Sen. Rand Paul’s filibuster last week, and in my opinion, they should be the ones ashamed of themselves (“Graham, McCain blast Paul filibuster,” Web, Thursday).
Taking the floor, the senators denounced Mr. Paul’s demands and said he was doing a “disservice” to the debate on drones. Really? Do those two care more about rules and old, stuffy protocols developed by stuffy old senators like themselves than they do about the Constitution and due process? That makes them the ones doing a disservice to the American people.
Mr. Graham said asking whether the president has the power to kill Americans here at home is a ludicrous question and does not deserve an answer. He needs to explain why that does not deserve an answer. Mr. McCain, Mr. Graham and a whole bunch of Democrats and Republicans are exactly what is wrong in Washington. The question absolutely deserves an answer. We need senators who are not afraid to do what is right, not afraid of asking questions, and not afraid of putting the Constitution and the rights of Americans first.
Senators who care more about toeing the party line have no place in politics or in Washington. I don’t care if they are Democrats or Republicans — they cannot forget that they are there to work for the people, not the other way around.
Thank you, Mr. Paul, Sen. Mike Lee and others for showing us a few of you still have the courage to stand for, with and by the people.
