New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is not only shredding the Constitution with new statewide gun-control laws, but he’s doing so “on the altar of his own ambition,” the NRA chief said at a rally outside the Capitol in Albany.
“New York has proven once again that it can top Washington in terms of the high-handedness of some of the people that hold its highest offices,” said NRA’s president, David Keene, to a crowd of roughly 5,000 opposing the new law, United Press International reported.
The New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act got fast-track approval via “message of necessity” legislative labeling and passed into law last month, UPI reported. It expanded the definition of banned assault weapons and put restrictions in place on ammunition magazines with more than seven rounds.
Mr. Cuomo had pushed hard for the new law, which went into effect Jan. 15 — a day after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.
“I’m here to join you in protesting the fact that your governor is willing to sacrifice the Constitution, your rights as citizens and the prerogatives of his legislature on the altar of his own ambition and on the ego of Michael Bloomberg of New York City,” where gun controls are even tighter, Mr. Keene said, in the UPI report.
