A 34-year-old Brandon, Fla., man was trapped in his bedroom after a huge sinkhole opened late Thursday evening beneath his house.

CNN reported Friday the man disappeared when the sinkhole opened and is presumed dead.

“It’s not confirmed, but I think it’s safe to presume,” said Hillsborough County Fire Department spokeswoman Jessica Damico, in the CNN report.

The Associated Press said the home was too unstable to continue search efforts. Engineers put the width of the hole at 100 feet.

The man’s brother was on scene when the sinkhole opened and tried to save him, Tampa TV says. A deputy responding to the scene then had to rescue the brother from the still-collapsing sinkhole.
