Police say a man tried to kill himself with a knife Thursday right outside the Rockefeller Center studios of the morning NBC “Today” show while cameras captured part of the scene.
Authorities said the man, who appeared to be in his 50s, tried to cut himself at the 7:50 a.m. mark, the New York Post reported.
Video outside the studio showed the man staggering behind a “Today” show partition, the Post reported. He was then tackled by security guards or police and transported to the hospital for treatment.
“Today” co-host Matt Lauer said during the 8 a.m. segment — which stayed inside the studio — that “there was an incident on the plaza,” the Post reported. “A man tried to harm himself with a knife. He did manage to cut himself. He was controlled by our security team out there.”
Mr. Lauer said the show would not move outside to broadcast, as planned, and the windows separating the studio from the street were covered, the Post said.
Mr. Lauer tweeted shortly after: “All secure on the plaza after a scary incident. Thanks for our security team and the NYPD.”
