Talk about being nice. When 84-year-old widow Gloria MacKenzie lined up to play her Quick Pick in last month’s mega-million Powerball lottery, the person in front of her let her cut. That decision turned out to be life-changing. Ms. MacKenzie turned out to be the winner of the $590 million pot.
“While in line at Publix, another lottery player was kind enough to let me go ahead of them in line to purchase the winning Quick Pick ticket,” she said, The Associated Press reported. She said she appreciated the other lottery player’s kindness – but asked for privacy.
She bought the ticket at a Florida grocery outside Tampa, AP said.
Ms. MacKenzie is a mother of four who moved to Florida from Maine. She now lives in a modest house in Zephyrhills, AP reported.
She chose the lump sum payment of $370 million, and after taxes, will take home about $278 million, lottery officials reported.
