Prosecutors say the 19-year veteran porn actor known as Mr. Marcus was sentenced Tuesday for knowingly exposing his co-stars to syphilis, which contributed to an outbreak that halted the sex industry.

The 42-year-old actor, whose real name is Jesse Spencer, was sentenced to 30 days in jail. He was also ordered to perform 15 days of community service and serve three years on probation, USA Today reports.

Authorities say Mr. Spencer altered the results of a Syphilis-positive test in order to return to work. He apparently appeared in two adult film shoots while he was still infected. It is not clear how many co-stars, if any, were infected.

Mr. Spencer was one of nearly a dozen porn actors who tested positive during a syphilis outbreak last summer that led industry officials to call for a moratorium on filming, USA Today reports.

In November, Los Angeles County voted to require porn actors to use condoms while filming. The industry has sued to overturn the law, arguing that its own testing guidelines for sexually transmitted diseases are sufficient, USA Today reports.
