Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, said on Tuesday that he would support a legislative ban on homosexual foreign couples adopting Russian children.
He also denied he was being discriminatory, or that gays were treated unfairly in Russia.
“If such a law is passed by the parliament of the country, I will sign it,” Mr. Putting said at the European Union-Russia conference, Agence France-Presse reported. “I think our legislation is very liberal … and there is no discrimination, none at all.”
His comments come on the heels of remarks by Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets, who said over the weekend the parliamentary members were in process of writing proposals to specify only heterosexual couples could adopt Russian children. She also stated that gay marriage was not in line with Russian customs, AFP said.
