Syria’s state-run media reported Tuesday that government troops have taken back a key Damascus district from rebel fighters.
The military has “restored security and stability to some vital areas” in Jobar, The Associated Press reported. Jobar is located on the northwestern fringe of Damascus and has been a rebel stronghold for weeks, used as a launching point to drive into the capital city.
Guerrilla fighters have used the post to fire mortars into the city for weeks, AP said.
The media report referred to the rebel fighters as “terrorists” and characterized President Bashar Assad’s forces as saviors of the city, AP said,
Syria’s official response to the two-plus years of conflict that has ripped apart the country has been to call it terrorism at the hands of foreign forces — and not recognize it as an internal civil uprising.
