Hundreds of residents near St. Louis have been evacuated after a levee was breached late Monday evening and flood barricades crumbled.

Major flooding was expected on Tuesday in several Missouri counties, and warnings were issued for residents from northern Illinois to Louisiana, CNN reported. The Mississippi River on Monday night was already more than 10 feet above flood levels, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on its website.

Five people have gone missing so far, and emergency responders have recovered the body of one — an 8-year-old girl who drowned in Deep Fork River, CNN reported. At least 18 have reportedly died in the storms so far, authorities said.
