Parents in a Wisconsin suburb face fines of $114 if their children bully others, according to a new ordinance that went into effect late last month.
The law, approved by Monona government officials on May 20, gives law enforcement officials the right to fine parents of bullies $114 for the first offense and up to $177 for each repeat violation that occurs within a year of the first, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
The ordinance, which also covers cyberbullying, is the first of its kind in the nation, said National Bullying Prevention Center officials.
The fine will only be used as a “last resort,” and in instances where parents refuse to work with law enforcement, said Monona City Attorney William Cole said.
