A huge fire that swept through a poultry plant in China on Monday killed more than 100 people, and the death count continues to rise as rescue workers discover more bodies in the debris.
The Associated Press said the latest death count stands at 119, and several dozen more have been reported injured. The plant’s winding corridors and narrow exits make escape and rescue efforts difficult, AP said.
The fire was sparked by three explosions, AP said. Local fire officials say the blasts came from an ammonia leak that may have originated from a locker room during an employee shift change, AP reported.
About 100 have managed to escape.
“When I finally ran out and looked back at the plant, I saw high flames,” one official said, in the AP reported.
