A military judge ruled Monday that Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan may represent himself in his trial for the 2009 Fort Hood shootings.
Col. Tara Osborn, the judge, said that attorneys for Maj. Hasan must stand by to assist him but that he’s sane enough to defend himself, CBS reported.
Maj. Hasan stands accused of the murder of 13 during a shooting rampage at the base in Texas. He’s paralyzed from the waist down from a gunshot wound from police during the attack.
A doctor told Col. Osborn on Monday that Maj. Hasan’s paralysis shouldn’t get in the way of his ability to represent himself, CBS reported.
Maj. Hasan faces the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.
