ST. LOUIS (AP) - Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has been suspended one game and fined by Major League Baseball for making contact with umpire Mike Everitt during an argument Sunday.

The commissioner’s office announced the penalty Monday evening, minutes before St. Louis hosted Arizona. Molina appealed the decision and was in the starting lineup against the Diamondbacks.

The announcement was made by Joe Garagiola Jr., baseball’s Senior Vice President of Standards and Operations.

Molina was thrown out on a close play at first base during Sunday’s game against San Francisco and slammed his helmet to the ground. First base umpire Clint Fagan immediately ejected Molina, who then went to argue. Everitt got in front of Molina, who bumped into him.

Molina, a four-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner, was hitting .347 with three homers, 14 doubles and 27 RBIs this season.
