Chick-fil-A issued a statement saying that a recent tweet from company president Dan Cathy decrying the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage and DOMA represented his views and his views alone.
Mr. Cathy posted his criticisms on Wednesday after the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government must recognize gay marriage in states that already allow the unions. He tweeted: “Sad day for our nation; founding fathers would be ashamed of our [generation] to abandon wisdom of the ages re: cornerstone of strong societies,” The Associated Press reported.
He later deleted the post — but the company, concerned about a repeat of last year when Mr. Cathy sparked gay rights backlash with his personal assertion that marriage was defined as between a man and a woman, in accordance with biblical teachings — issued a quick statement nonetheless.
“Dan recognizes his views do not necessarily represent the views of all Chick-fil-A customers, restaurant owners and employees, so he removed the tweet to eliminate any confusion,” the company said in a statement.
