Texas will reach a dubious milestone Wednesday when convicted killer Kimberly McCarthy is put to death, as it will mark the state’s 500th execution since 1982.
McCarthy, whose execution is set to take place in Huntsville, will be the first woman to be executed in the United States since 2010 and the 500th overall in Texas since the state resumed the death penalty in 1982, according to the Associated Press.
Maurie Levin, McCarthy’s attorney, said all appeals have been exhausted.
“If there was something to appeal, I would,” she said.
Texas has carried out an estimated 40 percent of the more than 1,300 executions that have taken place in the nation since 1976.
McCarthy is being executed for the 1997 robbery, beating and stabbing death of Dorothy Booth, a retired university psychology professor. Police said McCarthy, a former nursing home worker who became addicted to crack cocaine, is tied to two other murders.
