A British racing team said it’s broken world speed records for electric cars, test riding one at 204.2 miles per hour on Tuesday.
The old record for electric cars: 175 mph, set in 1974 at Royal Air Force base in Yorkshire, BBC reported.
Driver Paul Drayson, who also heads the Drayson Racing Technology company that claimed the new record, said the new speed shows that electric cars can compete with the gas-fueled counterparts.
“What it, I hope, shows to people is just what the future potential of electric cars is,” he said, to BBC.
The team used a Lola B12 Le Mans series car, and installed a lightweight dual motor-battery system that gave 850 horsepower, United Press International reported.
