Taliban militants staged an attack on the presidential palace in Afghanistan on Tuesday, but were killed in the process.
One palace security guard was wounded, The Associated Press reported.
The militants staged the attack with a car bomb and stormed the building. But guards were able to kill them all before they gained entry. The Taliban claimed responsibility, AP reported.
The attack came just as members of the media were gathering together for a press conference from President Hamid Karzai about peace talks with the Taliban, AP reported. It’s not clear whether Mr. Karzai was inside the compound during the time of the attack.
About the same time as the palace was under siege, a minibus drove over a bomb that was buried in a road in the southern region on the country. Eleven were killed — all members of the same family, a government spokesman told AP. Among the dead were eight women, two children and a man. Two other men were injured.
