A gunman dressed completely in black surprised two detectives who were returning to their Los Angeles police station on Tuesday, ambushing them and firing shots.
The detectives work with the station’s undercover burglary task force, police said, The Associated Press reported. They were using a keycard to open the gate outside the building about 4:30 a.m., and the gunman began firing.
“Suddenly, for no reason, someone behind them just started opening fire on their vehicle,” Cmdr. Andrew Smith said, to KABC-TV.
The gunman got off several shots before detectives were able to return fire. One detective was hit on the back of his head; the other, on his hand. Both were in stable condition, however, and helped police launch a manhunt for the suspect, who was able to flee.
“Our officers are going to be OK,” Cmdr. Smith said in the AP report.
