“Praise God — this is awesome.”
Those were the words of tightrope walker Nik Wallenda, as he successfully complete his quarter-mile, unharnessed journey near the Grand Canyon, 1,500 hundred feet above the Little Colorado River Gorge.
It took 22 minutes, and by his account, the winds were rough, sending gusts of dust into his eyes, The Associated Press reported.
“It was strenuous the whole way across. It was a battle. The winds were strong, they were gusty. But there was never a point where I thought, ’oh my gosh, I’m going to fall,’ ” he said, in the AP report. And why not?
He said he prayed constantly during the entire Sunday walk.
“Thank you, Lord,” he said, during his walk., AP reported. “Thank you for calming that cable, God.”
Fox News reported that some of his final words, upon reaching ground and successfully completing his cross: Thank you, God, “this is awesome.”
He later told reporters that “it was unbelievable,” and he started crying when he hit the ground, AP reported.
