A military spokesman for Turkey said Friday that “terrorists” shot at a helicopter transporting two commanders over an area that’s heavily populated by Kurds.
The helicopter was shot at four times, but all aboard escaped injury, the spokesman said, The Associated Press reported. The craft had been flying over Hakkari province, near the border with Iraq, on Thursday when it was targeted. One of the bullets hit a front window and lodged in a control box, the military spokesman said.
Kurdish rebels in the region are engaged in an ongoing battle for independence. But they agreed to a cease-fire in March, AP reported. As part of that deal, they’re supposed to be withdrawing all fighters from Turkey.
Kurdish rebels did not comment on the attack, AP reported.
