Spanish police said on Friday that they’ve arrested eight suspects who are accused of recruiting jihadists to fight with groups linked to al Qaeda in Syria.
Spain’s Interior Ministry said the eight were arrested in Ceuta, on the northwest coast of Africa, The Associated Press reported.
The ministry said in a statement that the eight were believed to have sent dozens of would-be fighters to Syria from Morocco. Some of those who were sent are suspected of actually carrying out suicide attacks in Syria, while others have been sent on to training camps, AP reported.
The identities of the arrested have not been released. But officials said they gave money and travel assistance to recruits, and were working directly for al Qaeda, AP said.
