Security think tank analyst Frank Gaffney had harsh words of criticism for President Obama’s plan to draw down U.S. nuclear arsenals, calling it “lunatic fringe, leftist stuff” that will jeopardize the safety of the world.
Mr. Gaffney, the founder of the Center for Security Policy, made the comments in a Thursday interview with Newsmax. He was speaking about Mr. Obama’s recent call during a speech in Berlin speech for reduction of U.S. and Russian nuclear stockpiles.
“It’s definitely a throwback to utopian leftists of yesteryear,” Mr. Gaffney said. “The president goes outside of the country to announce that he is going to eviscerate our nuclear deterrent … rather than to talk directly to the American people about it and dresses it up in this radical, totally unrealistic Utopianism.”
He also said that most in America would “realize this is nuts.”
“This is lunatic, fringe, leftist stuff and it’s likely to make the world a much more dangerous place, rather than less,” he said. “Exercising his responsibilities as commander in chief, taken to its logical, or illogical, extreme, he could disarm the United States entirely.”
Mr. Gaffney also advised Republicans in Congress to resist any drawdown. President Obama said during his speech that “today’s threats are not as stark as they were half a century ago” and that such a drawdown was necessary to foster peace, various news outlets reported.
