A consortium of conservative Canadians pushed through a ban on mask-wearing protesters, clamping down on even those who assemble for unpermitted rallies in groups of three.
The new law carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, United Press International reported, and targets groupings of three or more people who “needlessly and without reasonable cause provoke other persons to disturb the peace tumultuously,” the law states.
The law goes into effect immediately.
“[That] means police officers across Canada now have access to these tools to protect the public from masked rioters,” said one government spokesperson, in the UPI report. “We can all rest easier tonight.”
Canada joins the ranks of other countries like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain with laws aimed at preventing the public wearing of masks, Foreign Policy reported.
