New York City mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner is taking heat for the way he handled a woman who put down his opponent with a gay slur: Critics say he let the woman off too easy.

At a recent campaign stop, Mr. Weiner asked a woman if she was a registered Democratic voter, The Associated Press reported. She said “yes,” but then added that she wouldn’t vote for “what’s her name,” in reference to one of Mr. Weiner’s opponents, Christine Quinn. The woman then referred to Ms. Quinn as an expletive for a lesbian, Politicker reported.

In response, Mr. Weiner said: “You really shouldn’t talk that way about people,” but after the woman apologized, he commented, “It’s not your fault.”

City lawmaker Deborah Glick and state Sen. Brad Hoylman criticized for a lack of “moral courage,” Politicker reported. Both Mr. Hoylman and Ms. Glick are openly gay, the Wall Street Journal reported.
