WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says he’s trying to forge an asylum agreement for NSA intelligence leaker Edward Snowden to hide in Iceland.
“I feel a great deal of personal sympathy with Mr. Snowden,” Mr. Assange said in a conference call from Ecuador’s embassy in London, where he’s camping out to avoid extradition to Sweden over sexual-offense accusations.
“We are in touch with Mr. Snowden’s legal team and are involved in the process of brokering his asylum in Iceland,” he said, as United Press International reported.
The Icelandic Embassy in Washington confirmed it had been contacted by supporters of Mr. Snowden, UPI said, but officials wouldn’t comment further.
Mr. Snowden is believed to be hiding in Hong Kong. He characterized Iceland in a previous statement to the media as a favorable home.
