Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said in an interview this week that there is no doubt he will run for governor, as long as it’s not against fellow Democrat Jerry Brown.
“You mentioned governor. Look, I believe in public service. I want to run for governor. In fact, I fully expect that I will,” the Democrat told radio station KPCC. “The people of this town gave me a shot when a lot of folks thought it was an impossible dream. have no regrets. … There’s a bit of sadness on some levels, I guess, and nostalgia, but it’s about the people.”
But he said his gubernatorial run could be far off, seeing that Gov. Jerry Brown is up for reelection next year.
“He’s not going to run against Jerry Brown,” said political consultant Mike Shimpock, whose firm has worked for Mr. Villaraigosa, according to KPCC. “I don’t think Brown is beatable.”
The mayor told reporters in March: “One day I’d like to run for governor, but there’s not a vacancy last time I looked.”
Mr. Villaraigosa served as mayor for eight years, and will leave office on June 30, Fox News Latino reported.
