A 98-year-old Nazi suspect from Hungary who’s been under house arrest for a year was formally charged with war crimes Tuesday, accused of overseeing the deportation of thousands of Jews during World War II.
The court will begin hearing evidence within the next 90 days, Agence France-Presse reported.
Laszlo Csatari is a most-wanted alleged Nazi war criminal, as listed by the Simon Wiesenthal Center. The organization says he was a top Hungarian police officer who oversaw the Kosice ghetto. In this role, he helped deport an estimated 15,700 Jews between 1941 and 1944 to Ukraine, en route to Auschwitz, AFP reported.
He fled to Canada after the war and lived in Hungary for nearly 15 years. The Wiesenthal Center tracked him to Budapest in July of 2012, where he was arrested. He’s denied all the accusations.
