Montreal’s interim mayor was arrested at his home early Monday on 14 criminal counts including fraud, breach of trust and conspiracy, CNN reported.
Quebec police said the charges against Michael Applebaum, 50, “involve political support on two real estate projects” from 2006 to 2011.
Mr. Applebaum took over the mayor’s job in November after Gerald Tremblay resigned amid corruption allegations. At the time, Mr. Applebaum vowed to “end an era of sleaze” at Montreal’s City Hall, CNN said.
“The corruption and collusion will no longer be tolerated,” Commissioner Robert Lafreniere said at a police news conference on Monday. “No one is above the law and you cannot hide from the law.”
Mr. Applebaum denies all charges.
