A ferry navigating Philippine waters with an estimated 60 passengers on board sank on Friday, killing two.
The Associated Press said another 54 were pulled to rescue, while coast guard and navy vessels were dispatched to the area to search for more survivors.
Officials aren’t sure exactly how many were on board, because the ferry’s manifest differed in passenger count from that of emergency responders, AP said.
Amadeo Tan, a chief in a nearby village, said his wife called him from the sinking ferry and he, in turn, alerted local officials and headed to the coast to see.
“When we got there, we could no longer see any part of the boat,” he said, in the AP report. “It had already sunk.”
The reason for the ferry’s sinking is unclear. The weather was warm, and the sea was calm, AP reported.
