America’s 41st president is known for his outrageous choice in socks, and now the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation is celebrating his 89th birthday by encouraging people to post photos of their whacky socks online.

Mr. Bush’s office got in on the act to spur the celebration effort, distributing a photo of the former commander-in-chief sporting a pair of Superman themed hosiery.

The campaign, under the Twitter hashtag #41s89th, has garnered photos of colorful socks from across the country, including Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who donned neon-colored striped socks.

“Happy 89th to President George H.W. Bush—celebrating your birthday in style: #41s89th,” she tweeted.

Mitt Romney tweeted a photo posing with the birthday boy, exposing their striped tootsies.

“Happy birthday to a fellow socks fan! #41s89th,” the former governor posted.

Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren also tweeted a photo of her wearing a pair of black-and-white striped knee-highs.

According to the Foundation, select photos will be chosen and given to President Bush for his birthday.

The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University will also host a birthday celebration in honor of President and Mrs. Bush today with free birthday cake and Blue Bell ice cream.
