Edward Snowden, the man at the heart of the National Security Agency information leak, has disappeared from the public eye and gone dark in Hong Kong.
“Nobody knows where he is,” said an anchor on Fox News during a Wednesday morning broadcast.
The Guardian, a British paper, reported that he’s believed to be hiding in a “safe house” in an undisclosed location. Mr. Snowden, 29, initially said he would not hide — because he has no reason to hide.
“[I] have no intention of hiding who I am because I know I have done nothing wrong,” he said, in a Sunday interview with The Guardian. At the same time, he said he wanted to avoid the media spotlight because he didn’t want “the story to be about me. I want it to be about what the U.S. government is doing.”
U.S. authorities are preparing charges against Mr. Snowden, CNN reported. Meanwhile, Russia has stepped forward and announced it may offer asylum to Mr. Snowden.
A spokesman for President Vladimir Putin said that if a request for asylum for Mr. Snowden was made, Russia would honor it, Fox News reported.
