Russian lawmakers are set Tuesday to give the thumbs-up to a new law that would impose hefty fines on those who rally in support of gays.
Specifically, the bill — which is expected to pass — would fine anyone who passes along information about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community to minors, or who holds a gay pride rally, The Associated Press reported.
The measure has outraged the gay community, and several gathered around the Russian State Duma in the hours before the vote hoping to influence lawmakers.
At the same time, counter-ralliers gathered, holding picket signs and posters: “Lawmakers, protect the people from perverts,” AP reported.
Police detained about a dozen, AP said.
Russian lawmakers are also expected to cast final votes on a bill that would ban adoptions to those living in countries where same-sex marriage is legal.
