At least 100 riot police were summoned to the scene of a London protest against an upcoming summit of the Group of Eight industrialized nations as the demonstration turned ugly Tuesday, with one man trying to hurl himself off the roof of a building and law enforcement struggling to pin him to the ground.
Sky News reported that the man initially was shouting down insults at police from atop a roof of a central London building to protest next week’s G-8 global leadership summit in Northern Ireland. He then saw police in climbing gear trying to scale the walls, and he ran to the edge of the building, apparently trying to throw himself off to dodge arrest, Sky News reported. Police wrestled him and handcuffed him, sending him, his head bloodied, from the scene in an ambulance.
That’s just a taste of the turmoil that’s rocking London’s streets.
Police wearing riot gear are engaged in a standoff with protesters at a Beak Street property that once housed a police station, BBC reported. Liaison officers have informed the protesters that they will be forcibly removed, if need be. And various other skirmishes between police and protesters have dotted the central London landscape for hours now, various media reported.
Nearly three dozen have been arrested and charged with a slew of crimes, ranging from criminal assault to property damage to possession of weapons, Sky News said.
