Police are investigating the toppling of a monument in suburban Atlanta that was dedicated to one of first lady Michelle Obama’s distant relatives.
The monument, a stone structure to Mrs. Obama’s great-great-great-grandmother, Melvinia Shields, was pushed onto the ground, WSB-TV reported.
Shields had been born in the 1800s into slavery, The Associated Press reported.
Clayton County commissioners erected the monument a year ago in recognition of Shields’ most famous relative, in the White House, AP said.
The extent of damage to the monument is not yet known. It’s being inspected for cracks, AP reported.
