Iran said Tuesday it has revamped and re-armed a 50-year-old destroyer with modern missile technology and deployed it to the Persian Gulf.
The destroyer Bayandor now is equipped with anti-ship missiles that can fire up to 100 miles, said Rear Adm. Abbas Zamini, as The Associated Press reported. The overhaul took 20 months and comes as part of a 1992 government push to develop a stronger military program that allows the nation self-sufficiency, AP said.
Iran also has been pursuing modern jet fighters, tanks, missiles and light submarines, AP reported.
The Bayandor was named after a World War II hero, AP reported. It’s been part of Iran’s fleet since 1964.
