Seven Taliban militants launched a suicide bomb and gun attack on Afghanistan’s main airport in Kabul early Monday, taking on security forces in a violent battle that lasted almost four hours.
The airport is heavily guarded and is a key international travel point in the region. Four military units are located nearby, and the port is home to major operational NATO forces.
The Taliban claimed quick responsibility for the attack, as flights were canceled and roads sealed, Reuters reported.
The attack raised concerns about how the nation’s security force will deal with looming NATO troop drawdowns, targeted for completion by 2014.
The attackers were dressed as police, Reuters reported. They struck shortly before dawn, but there weren’t any reports of civilian or security force casualties.
