Wimbledon winner Andy Murray should be knighted, said Prime Minister David Cameron.
“Honors are decided independently but, frankly, I can’t think of anyone who deserves one more,” Mr. Cameron said, according to a U.K. tabloid. “It was a fantastic day for Andy Murray, for British tennis and for Britain. I think he lifted the spirits of the whole country.”
Mr. Murray is the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years.
“We were wondering yesterday morning, ’Do we dare to dream that this possible?’ And he proved absolutely that it was,” Mr. Cameron said.
Mr. Murray, 26, said he was personally congratulated by the Queen after defeating No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic in straight sets on Sunday.
