LONG POND, PA. (AP) - Count NASCAR great Jeff Gordon as a fan of the IndyCar Series’ return to Pocono Raceway.
Gordon made the trip with his family Sunday a day after he drove in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Daytona International Speedway. He held his son, Leo, on the grid before the race as he chatted with track officials. Gordon, a four-time Cup champion, was in New York when Leo decided he wanted to see some racing.
“I’m so excited to be here for Leo,” Gordon said. “He’s the one who saw the cars on the TV and said to my wife, Ingrid, `Race car! Race car!’”
So off they went to catch the IndyCar Series in its first stop at Pocono since 1989.
“To be back here in Pocono with the Indy cars, how could we miss that?” Gordon said. “It’s so cool. I’m here as a race fan and enjoying that.”
Gordon has six of his 87 career cup wins at Pocono.
