Egypt’s military opened fire Friday on scores of Mohammed Morsi supporters who had gathered near the Republican Guard headquarters to protest the president’s ouster.
Mr. Morsi, who was removed from power Wednesday by the nation’s military, is believed to be under house arrest in the facility, according to the Associated Press.
AP, which had a photographer at the scene when the troops opened fire, reported at least one protester had been killed. Reuters, meanwhile, reported that Egyptian security forces shot and killed three protesters.
A military spokesman denied any shooting of protesters, claiming that soldiers were only shooting blanks and tear gas as a means of controlling the unruly crowd.
Thousands of demonstrators have gathered in the streets of Cairo for a “Friday of Rage,” billed as a peaceful protest of Mr. Morsi’s ouster.
