Camp counselor killed in ‘freak accident’ when oak tree falls

An art counselor at a San Francisco area summer camp for Jewish families was killed Wednesday after a giant oak tree crashed on top of her.

Annais Rittenberg, 21, died at the scene. She was teaching art at Camp Towanga, located near Yosemite National Park, The Associated Press reported.

No children were hurt, but four other adults were taken to the hospital, AP said.

The tree, which was growing near the campfire and dining areas, took down several power lines, too. But it didn’t damage buildings, AP reported.

Police called it a “freak accident” and said the local Pacific Gas & Electric Co. was responsible for the performing yearly inspections on the tree.

“Everyone wants to know how this took place,” said PG&E spokeswoman Nicole Lieblet, in the AP report.

Ms. Rittenberg was studying environmentalism at the University of California in Santa Cruz, AP reported.
